Choosing the right aerial silks length can feel a bit confusing at first – but it doesn’t have to be! Whether you're practicing at home, teaching in a studio, or performing on stage, selecting the proper length is essential for comfort, safety, and freedom of movement.
The General Rule: Ceiling Height × 2 + 1–2 meters
To calculate the ideal length of your aerial silks, use this simple formula:
Rigging point height × 2 + 1 to 2 meters extra
Why the extra meter or two? It allows room for knots, wraps, tails, and some slack at the bottom so the silks don’t end abruptly mid-air.
Example:
- Ceiling height: 4 meters
- 4 × 2 = 8 + 1.5 = → Buy 9 to 10 meters of silks
If you plan to use a figure-eight descender or rigging hardware that shortens the drop, it’s still smart to allow for extra length.

What If You’re Practicing at Home?
Most home rigs range from 2.5m to 3.5m in height. In this case:
- 6–8 meters is typically enough
- Lower ceilings = fewer drops and wraps, so go for a lighter setup
Need something for kids? Our Aerial RIG KIDS works great with shorter silks too.
For Studios and Stages
If you're buying silks for professional use, check:
- Rigging height at venue or studio
- Local safety requirements
- Type of performance (drops? wraps? spins?)
Most studios opt for 10–14 meters, depending on ceiling height and room size.
Choose Your Length & Color
Quick Tips Recap:
- Measure your ceiling height carefully
- Multiply by 2 and add 1–2 meters
- Always round up if you’re unsure
- Check if your rigging shortens the hang
- Choose quality fabric with tested strength (like ours 😉)
